LEAVING THE UK:- Take the M3 or the A3 to Portsmouth. Ferries available at Portsmouth are via Brittany Ferries , to St. Malo in Brittany. They can be contacted via their website at http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/home or by phone on 0871-244-0744. The outbound service normally departs at around 2030hrs, and it's best to arrive at the port around 1900hrs for this.

The crossing is made overnight, and passengers can either choose a reclining seat, or a cabin for the night. Prices depend on the time of year of the crossing but range from a minimum of around £250 for a low-season crossing with normal family car (with reclining seat for the night) to a maximum of around £500 for a peak-season crossing with normal family car (with cabin for the night). This service normally arrives at St. Malo around 0800hrs the next morning, and you will be out of the port by 0830hrs.

Be aware that the returning ferry to the UK operates during the day, and leaves St. Malo for Portsmouth at around 1030hrs. For that crossing you will need to be back at St. Malo around 0900hrs, and you will be back in Portsmouth around 1800hrs the same day.

ARRIVING IN FRANCE:- It's best if driving a diesel car, to arrive with your tank fairly low, as the cost of refuelling with diesel in France is much lower than the UK, around the equivalent of 25p/litre less!! Petrol is around the same as in the UK.

Leave St.Malo heading South on the N137 to Rennes. Just before arrival at Rennes, you will come to the ring road, which you should take round to the west of the town. Once you have gone past Rennes on the ring road, rejoin the N137 to the South of Rennes in the direction of Nantes.

Just past the town of Nozay, take the single carriageway road the N171 heading Southeast through La Griggonais, Blain and Bouvron. Stay on the N171 until it becomes a dual carriageway at Savenay.

Once on the dual carriageway N171 at Savenay, simply follow it past St Nazaire and on to us at La Baule!

Long journeys in France are much easier than in the UK, and although the distance from St. Malo to La Baule is around 130 miles, you should easily cover it in around 2hrs.
