The Ile d'Yeu is the same distance from La Baule as Belle-Ile, ie 45 miles, most of which is over the water. The sea-crossing therefore requires a climb to 6500ft or more on the way over, for safety reasons if there is ever an engine problem, to enable a safe return to the mainland, or an onwards flight to the island without the engine. The Ile d'Yeu is the other preferred destination for the student's navigational flight, and also for CFI Phil on his day off. At left, the GT450 is already at 6000ft looking back towards La Baule airfield before setting off for Noirmoutier....
Before arrival at the airfield of Ile d'Yeu we do a quick trip round the island, which is only 6 miles long and barely 4 miles wide. Here, below, we are passing the harbour at Port Joinville, the principal town.
Passing the Island of Noirmoutier at 7000ft in this photo on the right. At this position we are roughly at the halfway point of the flight, and it gives the students a good chance to check their actual and planned positions, making corrections as necessary, before continuing out across the open sea to Ile d'Yeu.
On the left, one of our younger French students, Valentine, who got her licence at age 19 in the Blade 912 photographing Phil in the GT450 alongside - photo below! Both aircraft have been at 7500ft for some time.
And here below, our destination on the island, situated right on the cliffs - you can't make a mistake landing at this aerodrome!!
Both our aircraft, GT450 44AKM, and Blade 912 44ACY safely arrived at Ile d'Yeu... here, above left tied down in the parking area. At left below, Valentine, seen in flight above, ready for her trip into town, with Sammy - Phil's dog who has over 500 flying hours! Immediately below, Steve, here with us Xmas 2011, just after arrival with Sammy as 'baggage'...!
And here below where we stop for something to drink in the harbour at Port Joinville, before going for our lunch...
Seen below, the ruins of the old castle on the cliffs....
Below left, a view of one of the lovely beaches on Ile d'Yeu, after a good lunch, with of course, Sammy, Phil's dog, enjoying a welle-earned nap in the foreground... And below right, Jean-Christophe, another of our French students, enjoying a moment contemplating the sea after his navigational flight here....
And here at right one of the views available as we move round the island on foot.. Fancy some of this yourself?....
