LEAVING THE UK:- Wherever you are departing from in the UK, first make your way to either St Pancras International Station, London, or Ashford international in Kent. Once there, you will need to get to the Eurostar Terminal, and you are looking for the Eurostar service to Paris, Gare du Nord. Trains are available at regular intervals throughout the year. If booked 2 weeks or more in advance, the return cost of getting from London via Paris to La Baule can be as little as £90 per person, even in the peak season. If booking with less than 2 weeks notice then the price will rise to around £150.
ARRIVING IN FRANCE:- Around 2hrs 30mins after you leave London, you will arrive at Paris, Gare du Nord. From there you need to get to the Metro (underground) station which is in the same complex. You need to take line 4 (mauve on the metro map) in the direction of Porte d'Orléans from Paris Gare du Nord to Paris Montparnasse, which only requires one train and will take around 40mins. When calculating your train times, however, it's best to leave at least an hour for this journey. Please note that for the return you will need the same line but in the direction of Clignancourt.
On arrival at Paris Montparnasse, you need to make your way to the main line station for the TGV (Train de Grand Vitesse - high speed train) to Le Croisic. The TGV normally only stops three times after it leaves Paris; at Angers, Nantes and St. Nazaire. The stop for La Baule station is the one after St Nazaire. The TGV will take 3hrs from Paris to get to us at La Baule, and once there, the airfield is only 3 miles from the station, a short taxi ride.
The TGV journey from Paris to La Baule is nothing like a train journey in the UK!! The train only stops 3 times in 300 miles, and reaches a top speed of 186mph!! When the schedule says that the journey will take 3hrs, it takes 3hrs - you can set your watch by it!! There is a bar and restaurant car on each train, so the journey can be done in comfort, and you can arrive at La Baule refreshed and ready to start your flying training.
